  1. Shortening Social Media to a hash tag of two letters #SM, while may take up less characters, posses a challenge due to the letters S and M being another popular internet search. Something to consider when choosing a #hashtag.

By searching the hashtag #SM, there is a wide range of people using this hashtag. A majority of the people have a vested interest in social media as marketers, social media strategists, entrepreneurs, and bloggers. The people on this site are from around the world, as several posts are not written in english and by looking at the users profiles you can see where they are from such as @BradBennett a Kiwi living in France or @hrbartender from Flordia. There are a few tweets that are unrelated to social media such as #bsidesession or people adding additional hashtags to their tweet such as #LockItDown, that is used more as a phrase rather than a link.

For the most part there are recurring sources on how to use social media effectively, and effectively. Several posts provide links to additional resources and tips to engage the reader below are a few examples:

How to Manage Your Social Media Presence
How to Choose the Best Social Media Cover Images

I do not see any tweets that are including links to images or videos. From what is posted in the most recent tweets when I searched #SM the links were all to articles from the individuals own homepage and or articles that were posted through media channels.

  2. I notice that using the hashtag #sm that it's mainly used in relation to marketing. There are definitely a few people that I would call influencers based on how often they tweet and how many followers they have. There are a lot of links to articles around social media and marketing. I noticed a lot of links to photos but not any videos.

  3. I wasn't too thrilled about the hashtag #SM for the reasons both of you stated already, Kristen and Jill. The vast majority of tweets that I came across when browsing / searching via the #SM tag had to do with marketers promoting their services. While some of the tips were certainly helpful, I also found them repetitive, which means there wasn't too much "new and enlightening" or original. I guess it's good to have those reminders, though, to ensure we are being "effective" in our #SM communication.

Fortunately, the #SM tag yielded more results about what I was actually searching for and not too many of the "other" kind....That said, they definitely showed up in the search results....

Jill - good point about really thinking #hashtags through to ascertain if there is an actual or potential double-entendre in use of a #hashtag.

It reminds me of a local religious group in our community that used the hashtage #BS for Bible Study. It obviously has another meaning that brought up all kinds of other posts not related to religion.
